Shifting Perspectives to Break Myths: Tang Ho-chuen Paves a New Path for the Art of Incense

“Without incense, how can Hong Kong be called Hong Kong?” Alumnus Aaron Tang Ho-chuen, an incense master with a lifelong passion for traditional Chinese culture, has taken this question to heart. Seeing the gradual decline of the incense industry, he took on the responsibility of heritage preservation, turning the craft of incense into his career.

Making money is secondary; Aaron’s primary goal is to overturn society’s stereotypes about incense. During his studies in the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), Aaron learned to “wear different pairs of glasses” to understand the perspectives of different stakeholders. This insight enabled him to design products tailored to Hong Kong people, breathing new life into the incense tradition and advancing the art in contemporary society.
