Willis Chan (99/UC/Computer Science; 01/GS/Computer Science & Engineering) developed a passion for coding in secondary school and taught himself programming. After graduation, he unexpectedly pivoted into e-payments, becoming a key player in HK’s payment tech revolution. After developing HK’s first Visa payWave tap-and-go card at Hang Seng Bank, he joined EFT Solutions, crafting tailored payment solutions for merchants, including POS terminal. He describes HK’s payment landscape as a “Warring States period,” with Octopus, credit cards, and QR codes coexisting, but sees room for growth.
“E-payments demand 100% accuracy, there’s almost no margin for error.” He credits CUHK’s rigorous logic training for preparing him to thrive in this fast-evolving industry. Over the past decade, he’s witnessed payments leap from magnetic stripes to biometrics. He said: “This field grows exponentially. I must stay ahead!”
