【Issue124】Dorothy Chan

“Saving an abused child is far more complex than treating one with pneumonia.” After graduation, Dr. Dorothy Chan (98/CC/MBChB) began her career in the paediatric unit of the Tuberculosis and Chest Service. But for the past decade and more, she has devoted herself fully to child abuse cases. Knowing she cannot afford to wait for cases to surface, she takes a proactive approach. That is why every social worker and schoolteacher across the New Territories East network has her direct mobile number. They can call her immediately if they spot anything suspicious. It is all part of her mission to build a safety net with no gaps.

She has faced cases that brought her to the brink, but a reminder from her supervisor changed her perspective: The existence of such families is the very reason she must stay. In the stories of those she helps, Dorothy finds hope, and the strength to carry on.
